Poetry in the Making

Room 28 has been hard at work on their own poetic works of art. We have explored the power of similes and metaphors to communicate incredibly vivid descriptions with just a few words. Carl Sandburg's piece, "Theme In Yellow", helped us to learn the value of line breaks in the ways they can create, or even deconstruct, meaning.

Though our journey is far from over in this unit, read the comments attached to this post to see what students have been writing. Our intention is to share some of this work in a classroom Poetry Slam. Check out the video below to see a sample of what this might look like. If you have not seen spoken word before, you are in for a real treat!

Take a moment to applaud their bravery and courage to share their written word. And of course, as a class, we thank you for visiting!

  1. Life's Adventures
    Life is a wondrous adventure
Through every twist and every turn there is lots that can surprise you
To when you find how marvelous the things are in line to wait for you to come
With an excitement of happiness to a sadness of a bore there are many things to happen once you step out the door
Imagination is endless and there are many more things to imagine like imagining that ten million kangaroos are in your room or that a bicycling tarpon with a splintering tune
Life is wondrous in many ways
There is only once to live your life so make the most of every single day try some thing new every day There is only one way to live and that is the thing you choice
You are the guy who will steer the direction of your life so make the most of it that's my advice for
    Life

  2. Poem #1:
    The Maze

    The maze was amazing
    It amazed me a ton
    It was amazingly hard
It was as hard as getting
    out of a trap
I was as scared like a cat
    when it sees a dog
It got me on my feet
So, I gave it a glare
I gave it a glare as if,
    I was angry at it
Then I picked up the paper maze
    And gave it another glare

  3. The bushes look like little trees,
And flower like some sun lights,
The places after winter look alive around,
With tiny bugs as small as candy,
    birds sings bright,
    And frogs jump everywhere,
The grass, so soft, like wool of sheep,
Bellow my feet , so warm,
The flowers on all trees look just like fog,
But much much much m softer,
    The air blows with ease,
And every thing is much more nicer,
The trees are tall and all are filled with flower,
But then the winds began to grow,
    Like flower all through summer,
    The flowers fade,
    And so does sun shine,
Goodbye, the summer and welcome fall,
    And nothing can be done,
    And nothing can be done,

    The Meadow

    The meadow sits all lonely
    In the corner
As lonely as a empty parking lot
All alone by its self all bored
    With nothing to do
All sad like an empty apple tree
    But kind of glad
Glad as a kid on Christmas
    The meadow is mad
    Mad like a prisoner
    But happy in a way
    Very happy
Very happy like a person that
won an award for the first time

  5. Boredisum:
Boredisum is a disease that can kill you
Boredisum is like when you lose internet
    it becomes a big problem
Maybe you need to make a poem in Penzu
You need to wait with all your boredness
Too many people in the web
You wait, wait, and wait until you lose your patience...

  6. Poem #3
    Colors

    Colors are flowers
    So very colorful
    and so beautiful
    so beautiful that you can't
    forget them
    very precious
    very precious like a cupcake

    Every color is different
    just like flowers
    every flower is different
because of its color and texture
colors are different in many ways
one being how it comes out
on a paper or a surface

  7. Fun
Fun is when you go crazy.
Fun is when you hang out with your friends
It when you are doing something you like
    Something that makes you laugh
    Smile
    When you have pleasure.
    Fun is anything.

    Necklaces
    Necklaces mean so many things,
They can mean you are rich,
They can mean you are poor,
They can make you feel powerful like a queen,
    Feel weak with sadness,
    Next with pride,
    Necklaces mean many things,
    We are picky with them,
    We use them for style,
    To show off,
    Necklaces are beautiful.

    And nothing can be done,
    All trees begin to change,
    No leaves are left behind,
The ground is crusty and it's bright with red, orange, and yellow,
    But isn't filled with happiness,
    The sun is all behind,
The clouds of rain rise up ahead,
The flower fade like pictures through the fog,
The sun is up, but not as bright as always,
All bears hide in their homes,
And people don't like to walk outside,
The cars are filled with snow,
    And everything is colder,
    The snow again is falling,
All birds go back to their trees like lighting,
And geese go of and fly,
    To other places,
You can't see any life outside,
And all you see is sadness.

  9. Nature is Beautiful
    Tabassum

    Ladybugs,

in the garden and in the grass,

    crawling towards you.

    Butterflies,

    flying around and running around,

    in the air.

    Trees,

    that are all straight,

    giving you shade.

    All in the nature,

    they help you.

    Which you do not know.

    As in the phrase,

    Life is a dream,

    with all the nature,

because it is time to realize,

    nature is beautiful.

  10. Feelings for Colors
    Tabassum

    Ya know drawing,
    it takes colors.
    Well, then,
    what else has colors?
    Doesn't you feelings have colors??
    Think about it !

    Blue for sad,
    Red for love,
    Orange for happy,
    Yellow - I'm bright !
    Green to go green,
    or save the environment.
    Purple for okay.
    Black for sadness,
    White for yeah !
    And more for more.

Know you know what you are,
so chose your color, and be that way.
    See other peoples color.
    See them in different ways.
Because that my not be your or her way !

  11. Ruby, the Red Blood Cell
    Tabassum

    Hello Friends !
I am Ruby, the red blood cell.
I am in you, inside you, too !!
    I have a life journey,
so let me tell you !

    I start from anywhere,
from the right atrium, or the left atrium.
    Well let me start
    where there is something interesting.
Sounds like caterpillar, but it is capillaries !

    I trade 02 for CO2
in the cell, but not in a bell.
    Then up to the vein,
    where blood goes.

Now time for a fast run.....
Right Atrium, to the Right Ventricle,
    Then up the lungs.
    How fun !
Time to trade CO2 for O2.
Then Down to the Left Atrium, to the Left Ventricle.
And finally slowly back down to the artery,
    which leads to the capillaries.

    I do this every second.
    In your body.
    It is fun.
    But not to bad.
    What's next?
Read this whole poem, AGAIN !
